What a moon lamp is actually made of
Most affordable moon lamps — including every one we sell — are 3D-printed from plastic. The printer lays down fine layers that reproduce the moon's craters and dark maria in relief, so the surface has real texture rather than a picture of one.
That has three consequences worth knowing before you buy:
- It is light. Our 7-inch moon weighs about 1.5 lb, which is exactly why a plug-in pendant version can hang from a single hook.
- It is not glass or ceramic. It will not shatter if it is knocked, and its surface is matte and slightly rough rather than glossy. If you are picturing a glass orb, this is not that.
- It stays cool. With the LED bulb we ship, the shade stays cool to the touch in normal use.
We state the material on every product page, and we will say it here too: check what a moon lamp is made of before buying one from anyone. "Glass moon lamp" and "ceramic moon lamp" listings usually are not.
Size: 7 inches is bigger than you think

A 7-inch globe over a bed reads as a proper fixture, not a toy. The gap between the two sizes is only about half an inch — noticeable side by side, invisible when they are in different rooms. Choose by the room, not by the millimetres.
Brightness: what to actually expect
This is the single most useful thing a buying guide can tell you, so here it is plainly. A moon lamp of this size with the included LED is ambient light.
It will:
- light the corner above a bed so you can move around safely
- read as a glowing object from across the room
- be bright enough to read by if you are directly under it and the room is otherwise dark
It will not:
- light a whole bedroom to the brightness of a full ceiling fixture
- replace a desk lamp for homework at a table
- act as an ultra-dim infant nightlight on its lowest setting
That is worth repeating, because buyers often arrive expecting one of two opposite things — a paper-lantern-soft glow, or a room-brightening light — and get the middle. Owners are genuinely divided on exactly this point, which is why the review section on our moon product page shows the mild criticism alongside the praise.
If you specifically want a very dim nightlight, pair the moon with a lower-wattage E26 bulb or use the warmest setting at bedtime. If you need real task lighting, keep a lamp.
The three light settings, and when to use them
Every moon and star pendant we make includes a three-setting LED bulb, cycled from the switch on the cord. The exact tone names vary a little by model and are listed on each product page, but the shape of it is always the same:

As a general rule for bedrooms, warm and dimmer light in the hour before bed is easier on the eyes — and on sleep — than cool, bright light. That is the practical argument for choosing a fixture with a warm setting over a single-tone lamp.
Plug-in or hardwired?
This is the decision that actually changes your life — not the size.

Everything in our range plugs in except one: the 3D-printed moon ceiling light, which is hardwired and mounts to a standard ceiling box. It exists for the case where there is no outlet in reach and you want the clean, cordless look of a built-in fixture — and it is the right choice for a home you own. For everyone else, plug-in is the answer.
Where a moon lamp works best
- Above a bed, hung so the bottom of the moon is out of reach. The classic, and the reason it shows up in so many kids' room photos.
- In a corner, where it reads as a floating object rather than a light source.
- Over a reading nook, on the bright setting with the room otherwise dim.
- In a hallway, as a low landing light so nobody walks into a dark corridor at 2 a.m.
- In a nursery, on the warm setting, positioned so it does not shine directly into a crib.
Rule of thumb for hanging height: high enough that nobody walks into it, low enough that it still feels like it belongs to the room. Over a table, 30–36 in above the surface.
Living with it: care and bulbs
- Dust with a dry or very slightly damp cloth. The 3D-printed surface is textured, so avoid scrubbing it.
- Do not submerge it or run it under water.
- The bulb is a standard E26 LED and is included. When it eventually goes, any standard E26 bulb works — unplug the light before you swap it.
- Our pendants are for indoor use. A covered porch or entry is fine; rain is not.
